Basically this site enables you to make movable word labels without needing to use an IWB. The main drawback is that you can't save what you have done.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I wanted to use this to practise the perfect tense with Year 8, so saved a series of sentences in Word, for quick copying into the Word Magnets site during the lesson. I started off with just one short sentence at a time, then by the end of the lesson copied the whole of the text in and got students to form their own sentences from the vocabulary available. By then, it looked like this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a title="View Word Magnet Example on Scribd" href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/25214342/Word-Magnet-Example" style="margin: 12px auto 6px auto; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; -x-system-font: none; display: block; text-decoration: underline;"&gt;Word Magnet Example&lt;/a&gt; &lt;object codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,0,0" id="doc_278777734440823" name="doc_278777734440823" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" align="middle" height="500" width="100%" &gt; &lt;param name="movie" value="http://d1.scribdassets.com/ScribdViewer.swf?document_id=25214342&amp;access_key=key-1qp2q84q3hauxkg2mcdj&amp;page=1&amp;version=1&amp;viewMode=list"&gt; &lt;param name="quality" value="high"&gt; &lt;param name="play" value="true"&gt; &lt;param name="loop" value="true"&gt; &lt;param name="scale" value="showall"&gt; &lt;param name="wmode" value="opaque"&gt; &lt;param name="devicefont" value="false"&gt; &lt;param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff"&gt; &lt;param name="menu" value="true"&gt; &lt;param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"&gt; &lt;param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"&gt; &lt;param name="salign" value=""&gt; &lt;param name="mode" value="list"&gt; &lt;embed src="http://d1.scribdassets.com/ScribdViewer.swf?document_id=25214342&amp;access_key=key-1qp2q84q3hauxkg2mcdj&amp;page=1&amp;version=1&amp;viewMode=list" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" play="true" loop="true" scale="showall" wmode="opaque" devicefont="false" bgcolor="#ffffff" name="doc_278777734440823_object" menu="true" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" salign="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" align="middle" mode="list" height="500" width="100%"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt; &lt;/object&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I love the fact you can make the labels larger and colour code them do easily. Although you need to set this up ready for the lesson as it can't be saved, it actually turned out to be quite an advantage to do it in front of/with the students, as they were involved in thinking through which words were to be coloured and why.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I'm looking forward to using this now with all my classes and letting them have a go themselves setting challenges for partners in the ICT room.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-5822896399991286458?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/feeds/5822896399991286458/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=759368468069062518&amp;postID=5822896399991286458' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/5822896399991286458'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/5822896399991286458'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2010/01/word-magnets.html' title='Word Magnets'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-8225501550032047182</id><published>2010-01-11T16:09:00.005Z</published><updated>2010-01-11T16:21:41.559Z</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='GandT'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='blog'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='braincandy'/><title type='text'>Gifted and Talented Blog</title><content type='html'>Long time no blog, I know. Well actually, I have been blogging, just somewhere else. I've been running an experimental after-school club for students identified as G&amp;amp;T in KS3 over the last half-term, and (of course) decided to plan and run the whole thing using a &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.sprqs.blogspot.com"&gt;new blog&lt;/a&gt; (whose name may seem familiar) at &lt;a href="http://www.sprqs.blogspot.com/"&gt;www.sprqs.blogspot.com&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As ever, it has been really convenient to have all my resources together, all the more so because I am running the club in parallel with a colleague, so it is very convenient to be able to put all our ideas and materials in one place.&lt;br /&gt;Parental involvement (or at least liason) has been high on our list of priorities, so we have contacted everyone involved with the blog address and are trying to encourage them to follow the sessions (lesson plans are on the blog as well as materials) and have a go at some of the activities themselves. I'll find out next week how many had a go at "Einstein's problem" over Christmas.&lt;br /&gt;So far we have looked at values, and logical and lateral thinking, and our next session will be Russian/Japanese tasters. After that I plan to get students establishing their own blogs, and practising how to use online networks and communities to further their interests and learning.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-8225501550032047182?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/feeds/8225501550032047182/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=759368468069062518&amp;postID=8225501550032047182' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/8225501550032047182'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/8225501550032047182'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2010/01/gifted-and-talented-blog.html' title='Gifted and Talented Blog'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-2360968944460086055</id><published>2009-06-19T09:12:00.003+01:00</published><updated>2009-06-19T09:18:17.229+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='moblog'/><title type='text'>Moblogging in Zaragoza</title><content type='html'>Well, the &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.zaragozalive09.blogspot.com"&gt;Zaragoza blog&lt;/a&gt; this week has just had its 1000th hit! Back at school we have had some problems ensuring the students can access every aspect of the site, including being able to comment, but they have now been ironed out and we look forward to increasing our readership and more active participation next week when our students are in &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.bondueslive09.blogspot.com"&gt;Bondues&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-2360968944460086055?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/feeds/2360968944460086055/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=759368468069062518&amp;postID=2360968944460086055' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/2360968944460086055'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/2360968944460086055'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2009/06/moblogging-in-zaragoza.html' title='Moblogging in Zaragoza'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-5146212767986380565</id><published>2009-06-10T20:54:00.003+01:00</published><updated>2009-06-10T21:13:02.073+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='moblog'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='divshare'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='audio'/><title type='text'>Moblogging again</title><content type='html'>&lt;a href="http://www.espaname.es/learn-spanish-santander/img/Zaragoza-%20pilar.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 500px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 306px; CURSOR: hand" border="0" alt="" src="http://www.espaname.es/learn-spanish-santander/img/Zaragoza-%20pilar.jpg" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Summer term and time for a couple of moblogs. We started moblog experiments last year with our &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.montpellierlive08.blogspot.com"&gt;Montpellier&lt;/a&gt; trip, and tried out some cross-curricular blogging with &lt;a href="http://www.russialive09.blogspot.com/"&gt;St. Petersburg&lt;/a&gt; in the Spring. Now we are branching out with two moblogs operating at once, one from &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.bondueslive09.blogspot.com"&gt;Bondues&lt;/a&gt; one from &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.zaragozalive09.blogspot.com"&gt;Zaragoza&lt;/a&gt;, thanks to the Spanish Department's purchase of an additional camera phone.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Last year we used &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.gabcast.com"&gt;gabcast&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.podcastpickle.com"&gt;podcast pickle&lt;/a&gt; together to publish some audio as well as photos from the phone. This year, thanks to Adam Taha's's very clear &lt;a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7pAoXdkSck&amp;amp;eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eyoutube%2Ecom%2Fprofile%3Fuser%3Doffthehook2&amp;amp;feature=player_profilepage"&gt;video&lt;/a&gt; featured on Joe Dale's &lt;a href="http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/2009/06/uploading-mp3-files-to-blogger-or-wordpress.html"&gt;blog &lt;/a&gt;recently, we are going for including audio via &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.divshare.com"&gt;divshare&lt;/a&gt; and a tiny mp3 recorder. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Tomorrow I brief a group of students and accompanying staff on the basics of moblogging. Having set up blogs in &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/www.blogger.com"&gt;blogger&lt;/a&gt; for both parties and linked their camera phone to the blog to post directly, once they are abroad our mobloggers just need to take pics, add an accompanying text, and click on "send to blog". In addition internet access in the evenings from host families/hotels gives an opportunity to add further photos from other devices or simply more cheaply. I'm hoping the students will also be able to make recordings of reports in the Target Language of their day's experiences, which can then be posted in a divshare player directly onto the blog.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I'm looking forward to seeing (and hearing) what they have been up to and hope we will have good interest and participation from parents and friends. Watch this space for an update on how they are getting on.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-5146212767986380565?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/feeds/5146212767986380565/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=759368468069062518&amp;postID=5146212767986380565' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/5146212767986380565'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/5146212767986380565'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2009/06/moblogging-again.html' title='Moblogging again'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-2408164051328306534</id><published>2009-06-05T13:42:00.004+01:00</published><updated>2009-06-05T13:54:20.560+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='video'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='readthewords'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='photostory'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='oral'/><title type='text'>Revising for the orals with Photostory 3</title><content type='html'>&lt;a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SikVaxqIzAI/AAAAAAAAAIE/YzkEGNx4v74/s1600-h/photostory.jpg"&gt;&lt;img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343825982602660866" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 164px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SikVaxqIzAI/AAAAAAAAAIE/YzkEGNx4v74/s200/photostory.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; It's a bit late for Year 11, I know. My Year 10s are preparing for end of year orals and have been using a multimedia approach to drum those conversation topics in.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;The first stage was very conventional: write answers to questions on school, hand in, then type up the corrected version. Next, choose images from the net to reflect each of your answers. Drop these into &lt;a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx"&gt;Photostory 3&lt;/a&gt; and add the questions as subtitles.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Now the more unusual bit: upload your answers to &lt;a href="http://www.readthewords.com/"&gt;readthewords&lt;/a&gt;, choose one of the available French-speaking voices, and listen to your own answers. For students lacking in confidence this breaks the back of any pronunciation problems without the need for an unrealistic amount of time practising with the teacher. After a final rehearsal with me, the students then record their answers in Photostory, making a great resource to share with other students, mail home, or download onto a smartphone etc...&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;This took two 55 minutes lessons and two homeworks, and I'm looking forward to hearing the impact on their oral performances next week. The students certainly enjoyed making their short videos, and using speech simunlation as pronunciation support was excellent for boosting the independance of a bottom set.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Nice to feel new technologies can help us meet the old expectations of learning a certain amount of language by rote.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-2408164051328306534?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/feeds/2408164051328306534/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=759368468069062518&amp;postID=2408164051328306534' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/2408164051328306534'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/2408164051328306534'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2009/06/revising-for-orals-with-photostory-3.html' title='Revising for the orals with Photostory 3'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SikVaxqIzAI/AAAAAAAAAIE/YzkEGNx4v74/s72-c/photostory.jpg' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-1174252102242141546</id><published>2009-05-22T14:55:00.003+01:00</published><updated>2009-05-22T15:14:45.950+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='teaching'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Woldingham'/><title type='text'>Come and work at Woldingham!</title><content type='html'>&lt;a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/ShazSzKjn2I/AAAAAAAAAHk/bM2K2fDvsZU/s1600-h/Woldingham_School_main_building.JPG"&gt;&lt;img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5338651543847804770" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/ShazSzKjn2I/AAAAAAAAAHk/bM2K2fDvsZU/s200/Woldingham_School_main_building.JPG" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Due to a combination of unusual circumstances we are currently looking for a full-time teacher of French and/or German to start in September at &lt;a href="http://www.woldinghamschool.co.uk/"&gt;Woldingham School&lt;/a&gt; in Surrey. Woldingham is an independent girls' school for ages 11-18 and a fantastic place to teach. I used &lt;a href="http://technorati.com/search"&gt;technorati&lt;/a&gt;, the &lt;a href="http://edubloggerdir.blogspot.com/2008/01/search.html"&gt;international edubloggers directory&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://blogsearch.google.com/?hl=en&amp;amp;utm_source=AdWords&amp;amp;utm_campaign=us-ha-en-blogsearch&amp;amp;utm_term=blogger%20search&amp;amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;amp;utm_content=googleblogsearch"&gt;blogger&lt;/a&gt; (Google). My tips are as follows:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1) go straight to “advanced search” and make sure you are searching blog titles, not simply blog posts, otherwise you will end up with thousands of posts which happen to mention “geography”, rather than Geography blogs.&lt;br /&gt;2) limit your search to those blogs which have been updated in the last couple of months, to avoid your search taking you to a blogs' graveyard&lt;br /&gt;3) try searching for blogs with a word like “GCSE” or “revision” in the title to home in on school-run blogs&lt;br /&gt;4) specify “English” to filter out foreign language blogs&lt;br /&gt;5) read the first line of the post displayed before clicking on the link, and look at the blog address for clues as to the level of the blog (there are plenty of Science blogs run at University level for example)&lt;br /&gt;6) once you have found a decent blog, check out their blog roll before moving on – there may be useful links&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And finally, once you’ve found what you’re looking for, in future bear all this in mind when titling blogs and blog posts! Spending several hours on this task has made me determined to keep a balance between memorability, practicality and (occasionally) whimsy in future when I’m thinking up blog titles.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-4969807626580708098?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/feeds/4969807626580708098/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=759368468069062518&amp;postID=4969807626580708098' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/4969807626580708098'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/4969807626580708098'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2009/04/what-it-says-on-can.html' title='What it says on the can'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-3231302215503860487</id><published>2009-02-18T12:32:00.004Z</published><updated>2009-02-18T12:54:39.408Z</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='blogechange'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='eTwinning'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='blog'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='bears'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Voki'/><title type='text'>Virtual Exchange</title><content type='html'>&lt;a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SZwEmuA6feI/AAAAAAAAAGs/_nQ3uMDQdW4/s1600-h/blogechange+swing.jpg"&gt;&lt;img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304119524369006050" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 240px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SZwEmuA6feI/AAAAAAAAAGs/_nQ3uMDQdW4/s320/blogechange+swing.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Since September my Year 9 French class has been running a &lt;a href="http://blogechange.blogspot.com/"&gt;blog&lt;/a&gt; alongside a similar aged class in France. Our aim was for both classes to complete and post a task on the blog each month, and then look at one another's work, comment and generally get to know and help one another. In September we decided each student would post a voki, introducing themselves in the Target Language. We had some great lessons recording ourselves, and then listening to partner students' introductions. In November we realised a task a month was a bit ambitious, and sent bears to one another for a Christmas exchange visit. Toffee (our Woldingham bear) and Francois and Jules (pictured left) enjoyed Christmas in their exchange country and posted slideshows (hosted by&lt;a href="http://scribd.com/"&gt; scribd&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://voicethread.com/"&gt;voicethread&lt;/a&gt;) to report on their experiences. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;While we were using snail mail we also sent some handwritten letters to our partner class, which they then corrected, commented on and returned. In the meantime we have also posted individual photos, text, and the odd interactive game relating to work done in class.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;We have had to overcome several challenges, such as restrictions using Blogger in school, and the reliability of equipment at times, but the students are having great fun, and I would definitely recommend it as a relatively simple (and really cheap!) way of getting your classes enthusiastic about the country and seeing a real purpose for the language.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-3231302215503860487?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/feeds/3231302215503860487/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=759368468069062518&amp;postID=3231302215503860487' title='1 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/3231302215503860487'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/3231302215503860487'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2009/02/virtual-exchange.html' title='Virtual Exchange'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SZwEmuA6feI/AAAAAAAAAGs/_nQ3uMDQdW4/s72-c/blogechange+swing.jpg' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>1</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-8509015485043531710</id><published>2009-01-08T11:41:00.004Z</published><updated>2009-01-08T12:13:42.100Z</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='IWB'/><title type='text'>A New Year's Resolution</title><content type='html'>&lt;a title="View 10 IWB Lesson Ideas Presentation on Scribd" style="DISPLAY: block; No? Well in that case spare a thought for your poor IWB. Are you just using it as a projector for PowerPoints, or only using it on a Friday afternoon to go on a language-learning website? There are so many really quick and easy ways of creating your own flipcharts it needn't be too time-consuming (less so than going to the gym, definitely).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Have alook at the two documents here in &lt;a href="http://scribd.com/"&gt;scribd&lt;/a&gt; (you can search for my documents in scribd under the name Magpie41). The Word document gives an IWB lesson idea a week for ten weeks, and the PowerPoint shows you what your flipcharts might look like. I'd like to thank &lt;a href="http://209.85.229.132/search?q=cache:JdmXL0g3pGQJ:https://moss.ssatrust.org.uk/SiteCollectionDocuments/workshop%2520synopses%2520and%2520speaker%2520profiles_127636.doc+lesley+welsh+IWB&amp;amp;hl=en&amp;amp;ct=clnk&amp;amp;cd=2&amp;amp;gl=uk"&gt;Lesley Welsh&lt;/a&gt; for her inspirational presentation on using IWBs at this year's &lt;a href="http://iowconference.ning.com/xn/detail/u_joedale"&gt;Isle of Wight Conference&lt;/a&gt;, particularly for mix, match and memorize and 9 lives (my names but her ideas). You are free to download my PowerPoint and chunk it down into your own IWB software.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So resolve to give your creativity a work-out this Year! If you need a second resolution, incidentally, I'd recommend sharing with your department and dividing up the work so between you it is a manageable job to update your Schemes of Work by including original, bespoke whiteboard materials. This site is really easy and fun to use and can cope with several languages and accents. My first experiment is aimed at getting my Year 10s to remember the basic rules and a few key forms of the perfect tense. I asked the group to write some questions and answers about forming the tense, and then typed their dialogue into the site. It is great fun choosing the camera angles, gestures and facial expressions. In &lt;a href="http://www.xtranormal.com/watch?e=20081209162040758"&gt;episode two&lt;/a&gt; the French tutor demonstrates some of the verbs, and I'm going to invite my students to script episode 3, where our learner takes her first uncertain steps in the perfect. I think then I might invite students to invent another character our French learner can meet. The resulting videos can be posted on &lt;a href="http://youtube.com/"&gt;youtube&lt;/a&gt;, embedded in your blog or simply searched on xtranormal's site, which offers the usual possibilities of ratings, comments and remixes. I mean, who has ever actually had a conversation about this? You look at the map, buy tickets from a machine, and don't even have to bother interupting the flow of your iPod. However, this morning I found ratp's wonderful &lt;a href="http://www.ratp.info/orienter/cv/carteparis.php"&gt;interactive site&lt;/a&gt; which helps you to plan metro journeys. Click on your departure station and then mark it with a green flag as your departure station. Then select your destination station and mark it with a red flag. You can also click on the local map symbol to plan your walking route to an attraction once you have finished you metro journey. It is a really user-friendly, practical tool which my Year 9 enjoyed experimenting with. It then isn't too difficult to slip in a quick "carnet-buying" conversation before the glow of the website wears off. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;If you have any nominations for more tedious topic for MFL (or any other subject you teach) please drop a comment on to this post and we'll see what ideas and resources we can come up with.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-8915169984061165901?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/8915169984061165901'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/8915169984061165901'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/11/nominations-for-most-tedious-topic.html' title='Nominations for most tedious topic'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-4714986202136282088</id><published>2008-11-17T11:16:00.002Z</published><updated>2008-11-17T11:45:36.635Z</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='photo'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Leeds'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Dragonfly'/><title type='text'>Training in Leeds</title><content type='html'>&lt;div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"&gt;&lt;a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SSFSnHvwMAI/AAAAAAAAAE0/7kBaFGau19o/s1600-h/image-upload-130-704350.jpg"&gt;&lt;img src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SSFSnHvwMAI/AAAAAAAAAE0/7kBaFGau19o/s320/image-upload-130-704350.jpg" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:+0;"&gt;We're finding out about blog basics today.&lt;/span&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-4714986202136282088?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='replies' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/feeds/4714986202136282088/comments/default' title='Post Comments'/><link rel='replies' type='text/html' href='http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=759368468069062518&amp;postID=4714986202136282088' title='0 Comments'/><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/4714986202136282088'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/4714986202136282088'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/11/training-in-leeds.html' title='Training in Leeds'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SSFSnHvwMAI/AAAAAAAAAE0/7kBaFGau19o/s72-c/image-upload-130-704350.jpg' height='72' width='72'/><thr:total>0</thr:total></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-975021429857075750</id><published>2008-10-29T21:22:00.005Z</published><updated>2008-10-29T21:45:18.293Z</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='audacity'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Isle of Wight Conference'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Voki'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='dvr'/><title type='text'>Isle of Wight Conference</title><content type='html'>Had a great time at the &lt;a href="http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/2008/09/book-now-for-th.html"&gt;Isle of Wight Conference&lt;/a&gt; last weekend. It was good to put some faces to names, and a great opportunity to pick up some tips on podcasting and &lt;a href="http://www.etwinning.net/en/pub/index.htm"&gt;eTwinning&lt;/a&gt; (in my case that is, the choice of workshops was far wider). Persuaded by &lt;a href="http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/2007/09/kathleen-holton.html"&gt;Kathleen Holton's &lt;/a&gt;session on digital voice recorders I've invested in a &lt;a href="http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dic-digital-recorder/icd-ux70"&gt;Sony UB70X&lt;/a&gt; and am already enjoying recording and uploading audio much more simply and quickly than with audacity (press record, talk, press stop, plug into the USB port and off you go). Yesterday I added a comment &lt;a href="http://voki.com"&gt;voki&lt;/a&gt; to the voki posted by our partner class in France on our &lt;a href="http://blogechange.blogspot.com"&gt;shared blog&lt;/a&gt; using the Sony recorder and am hoping the French class will use comment vokis maybe rather than typed comments to give us a bit of feedback (this will make sense if you follow the links above).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So a big thank you to &lt;a href="http://joedale.typepad.com"&gt;Joe and Heather Dale&lt;/a&gt;, and all the speakers at the conference for a fantastic weekend. Lots of inspiration, and several instances of making digital life easier: we couldn't ask for more. Didn't have an opportunity to go to Alvin's Waffle House, however. We're studying two films of Truffaut for A2 and as we are homing in on character work at the moment, I thought it would be fun for them to write their own extra scene for the film and set up a heart-to-heart between a couple of characters, using the Pixton cartoon site as a medium. Despite taking a while to get to grips with it (not for the colour-blind: in advanced cartoon creation everything depends on whether the editing box over your character is blue, red or green...) they really enjoyed the creativity of the activity. Within half an hour they had found imaginitive ways of expressing the character's views and feelings in words and by using the highly-customisable posture and expression options Pixton provides. The bonus was that the students are beginning to understand, hands-on, what sorts of decisions a director has to make, frame by frame ("shall I zoom on the character or will I miss out on the other character's reaction?"etc.). The corrected, printed versions are going to make an eye-catching start to our Truffaut character wall.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;PS Links are playing up for me again tonight, so with apologies, the one vital address here: www.pixton.com&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I previously suspected, Pixton is maybe a little too complex and less visually appealing than other sites, such as toondoo, for younger students, but is a fantastic tool for the more ambitious or experienced. I'm now wondering about setting a cartooning task for November's "blogechange" project...&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-9125045983896942916?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/9125045983896942916'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/9125045983896942916'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/10/pixton-again.html' title='Pixton again'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-7731485731102420513</id><published>2008-10-04T13:38:00.004+01:00</published><updated>2008-10-04T13:42:54.034+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='cartoon'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='pixton'/><title type='text'>Pixton Advanced Cartoon Creation</title><content type='html'>&lt;script type="text/javascript" src="http://pixton.com/embedded/comic/95512nmu"&gt;&lt;/script&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-7731485731102420513?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/7731485731102420513'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/7731485731102420513'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/10/pixton-advanced-cartoon-creation.html' title='Pixton Advanced Cartoon Creation'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-6621562507279111475</id><published>2008-09-24T21:29:00.005+01:00</published><updated>2008-09-24T21:44:05.761+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='course'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='IOW conference'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='training'/><title type='text'>Isle of Wight Conference</title><content type='html'>This is the moment I have been waiting for: booking has started for the Isle of Wight Conference, the MFL/ICT conference organised by Joe Dale and taking place this half-term. For any reading this who are linguists, do have a look and consider treating yourself to a few days on the island this October. Not only will you be able to visit Dinosaur Isle, enjoy invigorating strolls along the beach and maybe even paint your own piece of commemorative pottery (and I'm not scoffing, I love all those things), you can also immerse yourself in cutting-edge technology, explained and tutored by some of the best language teachers in the country. I've already signed up for sessions on podcasting, e-Twinning and using avatars in MFL teaching, to name but a few. At £100 for a two day dose of inspiration I challenge anyone to find better value and you will still have money left to feast on Alvin's Waffles (Old Shanklin - you have to go) before you leave.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So if you only ever follow one link from this site, follow this:&lt;a href="http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/2008/09/book-now-for-th.html"&gt;http://joedale.typepad.com/integrating_ict_into_the_/2008/09/book-now-for-th.html&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(apologies for not linking more neatly blogger is playing up on me tonight)&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-6621562507279111475?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/6621562507279111475'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/6621562507279111475'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/09/isle-of-wight-conference.html' title='Isle of Wight Conference'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-5458694397048869849</id><published>2008-09-19T10:17:00.003+01:00</published><updated>2008-09-19T10:30:14.124+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='voki virsona AI'/><title type='text'>How to talk to students so they will listen to you</title><content type='html'>I came across a book recently of virtually the same name about talking to young children in a way they understand and remember. We also need to find ways of getting our students to tune in to us and one another. &lt;a href="http://voki.com/"&gt;Vokis&lt;/a&gt; are amongst my favourite applications for doing this, and the next batch I have planned are to be prepared by my year 9s to post on our &lt;a href="http://www.blogechange.blogspot.com/"&gt;shared blog&lt;/a&gt; with a class in France as a way of introducing themselves to their new friends. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Last week &lt;a href="http://nikpeachey.blogspot.com/2008/09/artificial-intelligence-chat-bots-and.html"&gt;Nik Peachey&lt;/a&gt; posted on using &lt;a href="http://www.virsona.com/"&gt;Virsonas&lt;/a&gt; with EAL students in a similar way (as far as I can see they are a super-deluxe version of a voki, using Artifical Intelligence technology and with far greater potential). I immediately mailed the company to enquire if they would be bringing out versions that can cope with languages other than English, and to my delight received the reply they were already working on it and hope to make a French version available in January 09. Definitely a date in my diary.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To read more about vokis you can check out today's Times Ed. magazine, in the dubiously-named "Geek Speak" section, where I've shared a few ideas on using speaking avatars, and text to speech technology generally.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Did I slip that in smoothly enough? Just nipping out now to buy copies for all my friends and relatives....&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-5458694397048869849?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/5458694397048869849'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/5458694397048869849'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/09/how-to-talk-to-students-so-they-will.html' title='How to talk to students so they will listen to you'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-4044533797431065093</id><published>2008-09-09T10:14:00.005+01:00</published><updated>2008-09-19T10:14:30.116+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='training'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Woldingham'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='childnet'/><title type='text'>Woldingham School ICT Day</title><content type='html'>On Thursday 4th September staff had a great day at &lt;a href="http://www.woldinghamschool.co.uk/"&gt;Woldingham&lt;/a&gt;, discovering more about the potential of ICT in students' lives. To kick off our Head of ICT, Joanna Winstanley, gave a presentation on basic skills covered by all our students in years 7-9. It is a great help to see what students' skills already are when we use ICT in our subject teaching, and also to see how we can reinforce the ICT Department's messages about how to use core programs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We then welcomed Ellen Coen from &lt;a href="http://www.childnet-int.org/"&gt;Childnet International&lt;/a&gt;, an internet safety charity, who led a session on internet safety. She covered the main new technologies students may be using out of school hours, as well as showing us a a really effective &lt;a href="http://www.digizen.org/cyberbullying/film.aspx"&gt;video&lt;/a&gt; to use with students on cyberbullying. Childnet's approach involves informing of the potential dangers of the net environment, whilst encouraging us to model good usage of it by using these technologies with our students.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the afternoon we spilt into workshop groups to spend some time "hands on". Music, Maths and Science worked on their own software, whilst other staff looked at blogging, podcasting, intranet and IWB. For Woldingham staff, you can take a look at what John and Kelly produced using &lt;a href="http://www.prometheanplanet.com/"&gt;Promethean&lt;/a&gt; interactive whiteboard software on our T drive in the IWB Training folder. Look for the files entitled Sutton Hoo and Skeleton, and click on the N at the top of the page for an explanation of how to use them. I'm just waiting for more links to the baby blogs created on the day to add them to the blogroll - but you can already check out the French and Japanese Departments' offerings. Let's hope there will be plenty more activity on these fronts over the next few months. Hopefully taking a group of staff to the &lt;a href="http://www.teachingexhibitions.co.uk/Exhibitions/TES+Teaching+Exhibition/TES+Education/2008/"&gt;TES&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.bettshow.com/"&gt;BETT&lt;/a&gt; shows will give us added impetus.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-4044533797431065093?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/4044533797431065093'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/4044533797431065093'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/09/woldingham-school-ict-day.html' title='Woldingham School ICT Day'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-7378630612933990609</id><published>2008-07-23T03:18:00.004+01:00</published><updated>2008-07-23T03:24:20.035+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='French'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='widget'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='languages'/><title type='text'>Widgetbox</title><content type='html'>Unable to sleep because of a very sore throat (it seems strange to be up at this time without a toddler having woken me...), I've just been browsing &lt;a href="http://www.widgetbox.com/"&gt;www.widgetbox.com&lt;/a&gt; for some extra features for my subject blog. There are several "learn a word a day" widgets, and this (sidebar left) is my favourite. As well as presenting a key word it provides pronunciation, and an example sentence. In the case of verbs you can scroll forwards or back to conjugate in different tenses. Looks like a straightforward and useful widget which I hope to get my Year 10s looking at in the Autumn. Looks good for more advanced students, as it is flexible but maybe less visually-attractive than some others. &lt;a href="http://makebeliefscomix.com/"&gt;Makebeliefscomix&lt;/a&gt; is good as a beginners' site, as it gives simple on-screen instructions and isn't cluttered with complicated features. No registration is needed, so quick to set up a task with students, but they will need to print their strip as the site does not store cartoons. &lt;a href="http://comiqs.com/"&gt;Comiqs&lt;/a&gt; is fun and flexible, as you can use your own photos, so could be really motivating, but you need to be careful about permission to use photos. I like the idea of getting students to work on some exchange photos on their return from a trip (or indeed while you are there if they are in a school and have access to computers). My personal favourite, however, is &lt;a href="http://toondoo.com/"&gt;toondoo&lt;/a&gt;, as it provides a really wide variety of characters (including aliens and monsters) and props which can really spark off the imagination and elicit some really interesting language. You can see an example of a toondoo cartoon &lt;a href="http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/search?q=cartoon"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt; and a pixton strip in the post above.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-3833729220016643?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/3833729220016643'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/3833729220016643'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/07/loony-toons.html' title='Loony Toons'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-1794877316780748841</id><published>2008-06-24T13:03:00.004+01:00</published><updated>2008-12-12T05:21:14.959Z</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='moblog'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Montpellier'/><title type='text'>Moblogging from Montpellier</title><content type='html'>&lt;a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SGDkIVbZqhI/AAAAAAAAACo/TrHNxt9h8H4/s1600-h/montpellier+rotate.jpg"&gt;&lt;img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5215419200337193490" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SGDkIVbZqhI/AAAAAAAAACo/TrHNxt9h8H4/s320/montpellier+rotate.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;This week two colleagues are accompanying a trip to Montpellier with 14 Year 10 girls. We set up a live blog at &lt;a href="http://www.montpellierlive08.blogspot.com/"&gt;http://www.montpellierlive08.blogspot.com/&lt;/a&gt; to record their progress and so far things are going really well. They have blogged a number of photos and have made their first gabcast recording - a clip in French about how they are settling in. The most exciting part is watching the site meter and seeing parents and friends repeatedly log in to check for news. Given that Woldingham girls come from far and wide our blog community is already global, with visits from Thailand, the USA, France, Belgium and of course the UK. Have a look this week and maybe post them a comment!&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-1794877316780748841?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/1794877316780748841'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/1794877316780748841'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/06/moblogging-from-montpellier.html' title='Moblogging from Montpellier'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author><media:thumbnail xmlns:media='http://search.yahoo.com/mrss/' url='http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_KLRMREJrOU0/SGDkIVbZqhI/AAAAAAAAACo/TrHNxt9h8H4/s72-c/montpellier+rotate.jpg' height='72' width='72'/></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-3533676967246601327</id><published>2008-06-18T09:16:00.003+01:00</published><updated>2008-06-18T09:28:07.084+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='wiki'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='revision'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='GCSE'/><title type='text'>Revision wikis</title><content type='html'>I've only recently started getting interested in &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki"&gt;wikis&lt;/a&gt;, and thinking about how they can be used in schools, compared to the potential of using a blog. A podcast by &lt;a href="http://joedale.typepad.com/"&gt;Joe Dale&lt;/a&gt; recently alerted me to work being done by a previous Head of Department of mine, &lt;a href="http://zoominfo.com/people/Morris_Peter_657131478.aspx"&gt;Peter Morris&lt;/a&gt;, at &lt;a href="http://gordano.n-somerset.sch.uk/index.php?option=com_content&amp;amp;task=view&amp;amp;id=15&amp;amp;Itemid=37"&gt;Gordano School&lt;/a&gt; near Bristol. His college use &lt;a href="http://moodle.barrow6fc.ac.uk/moodle/"&gt;Moodle&lt;/a&gt; and he was keen to think through where &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_learning_environment"&gt;VLEs&lt;/a&gt; and blogs overlapped and to what extent blogging would be relevant to his situation. Therefore I installed a counter widget last week and was astounded at braincandy's popularity -as it scaled the dizzy heights of 12000 hits within a day or so. Suspicious my blog is not yet quite so well-known I have removed that widget and installed an alternative one (also from &lt;a href="http://www.widgetbox.com/"&gt;widgetbox&lt;/a&gt;). I look forward to more sober stats.!&lt;br /&gt;Seriously, the point of all this is that I want a reliable counter for our first moblog. You can see the embryo of this blog forming at &lt;a href="http://www.montpellierlive08.blogspot.com/"&gt;www.montpellierlive08.blogspot.com&lt;/a&gt;. We will be meeting in the French department within the next few days to discuss ways into this trip and its accompanying blog for year 10, and maybe setting them some research work to get them using the blog before they go. Meanwhile I have created an account and set up a Montpellier channel with &lt;a href="http://www.gabcast.com/"&gt;gabcast&lt;/a&gt;. This week I will be practising creating mp3s by 'phone and hopefully having them sent directly to the trip blog so that we know what we are doing in June.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-1290406304577482411?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/1290406304577482411'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/1290406304577482411'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/05/you-dont-fatten-pig-by-weighing-it.html' title='You don&apos;t fatten a pig by weighing it'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-2018976242284239645</id><published>2008-05-01T13:28:00.004+01:00</published><updated>2008-05-08T22:08:58.639+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='video'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='Animoto'/><title type='text'>Make a your own video from digital photos</title><content type='html'>Log on to Animoto to check this out and do listen to the soundtrack - the music they provide is pretty cool. This blog is designed for an able year 11 or a Sixth Form group. Inspecteur Duval (of course Duval, as those familiar with the valley our school is in will know) has to solve the mystery of a diamond theft from a luxury Paris Hotel. Using links to sites connected with the suspects and scene of the crime students begin to develop the characters, and prepare vokis giving a brief statement of innocence, as well as mp3s of initial interviews with Duval. Students then decide which of the suspects is going to be guilty, and plan a subtle gap or discrepancy in their story, as well as plenty of motivation for all three suspects, just to make things tricky! They can then record or post statements from supporting characters. When the project is finished (I estimate three weeks of 1hr 20 a week) we have a murder-mystery blog activity for other groups to solve. At that stage I might invite new participants onto the jury and use the polling feature in Blogger for them to cast their vote, with a 1G memory stick as a prize for the best judge's sentencing speech posted as a comment.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-6957677655134507510?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/6957677655134507510'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/6957677655134507510'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/04/whodunnitblog.html' title='Whodunnitblog'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-8863051659617930700</id><published>2008-04-17T11:38:00.003+01:00</published><updated>2008-04-17T11:52:18.037+01:00</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='authorstream iPod iTunes video youtube teachertube PowerPoint'/><title type='text'>Share your PowerPoints</title><content type='html'>&lt;a href="http://www.authorstream.com/"&gt;Authorstream&lt;/a&gt; is a great way of sharing PowerPoints with others. Whichever way you do it, it is a quick and effective way of sharing resources with colleagues or students. This one is something I put together for my Year 9 for the topic we are about to start on health. I intend to embed this in the class's &lt;a href="http://www.haythorneg.edublogs.org/"&gt;blog&lt;/a&gt; and at some stage use it as revision for them for a listening test, and I am also going to try getting them to make their own as an end of year consolidation task. over the weekend as Niamh is going to be getting the students on the Paris trip to moblog (remote blog) using their internet/camera phones from France. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is easy for you to post a comment for them to read while they are away, if you wish. You will just need to type your e-mail address, an anti-spam word and a comment in the relevant boxes on the website above.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Would welcome any feedback or ideas after the weekend.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Meanwhile, Toby has found out for me how to embed PowerPoints in Blogger. Whilst it is a bit more complicated than the obvious route in edublogs it looks really neat. Sign up to &lt;a href="http://www.scribd.com/"&gt;www.scribd.com&lt;/a&gt; and upload your file to the scribd website. Then paste the code they give you into the html tab side of a new post in Blogger. Done. If you have problems, it may be that the width of your Blogger template is not sufficient to accommodate the PowerPoint. If that is the case you can go to "Templates" and "Edit" from your dashboard to check out what width you have available and edit te scribd code down accordingly. Anyway, I have to say it worked really easily when I tried (i.e. without extra editing) and you can see the results below.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-89462086189772025?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/89462086189772025'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/89462086189772025'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/02/moblogging-and-powerpoints.html' title='Moblogging and PowerPoints'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-7030458827298766108</id><published>2008-02-29T12:25:00.000Z</published><updated>2008-02-29T12:26:02.850Z</updated><title type='text'>Uploading PowerPoint to Blogger</title><content type='html'>&lt;script&gt;document.write('&lt;noscript&gt;');&lt;/script&gt; &lt;object codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,0,0" id="embedded_flash_2191966_qcv07_object" name="embedded_flash_2191966_qcv07_object" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" align="middle" height="500" width="100%"&gt;&lt;param name="flashvars" value="&amp;document_id=2191966&amp;access_key=key-2nm4l94xlcvsddolkk6d&amp;page="&gt; &lt;param name="movie" value="http://documents.scribd.com/ScribdViewer.swf"&gt; &lt;param name="quality" value="high"&gt; &lt;param name="play" value="true"&gt; &lt;param name="loop" value="true"&gt; &lt;param name="scale" value="showall"&gt; &lt;param name="wmode" value="opaque"&gt; &lt;param name="devicefont" value="false"&gt; &lt;param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff"&gt; &lt;param name="menu" value="true"&gt; &lt;param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"&gt; &lt;param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"&gt; &lt;param name="salign" value=""&gt; &lt;embed flashvars="&amp;document_id=2191966&amp;access_key=key-2nm4l94xlcvsddolkk6d&amp;page=" src="http://documents.scribd.com/ScribdViewer.swf" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" play="true" loop="true" scale="showall" wmode="opaque" devicefont="false" bgcolor="#ffffff" name="embedded_flash_2191966_qcv07_object" menu="true" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" salign="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" align="middle" height="500" width="100%"&gt;&lt;/embed&gt; &lt;/object&gt;&lt;/noscript&gt;&lt;script type="text/javascript" src='http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/view.js'&gt;&lt;/script&gt;&lt;div id='embedded_flash_2191966_qcv07' style="width:100%;height:100%"&gt;&lt;span style="display:none"&gt;Read this doc on Scribd: &lt;a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/2191966/Promethean-Interactive-Whiteboard-Ppt-Quiz-1"&gt;Promethean Interactive Whiteboard Ppt Quiz 1&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt; &lt;/div&gt; &lt;script type="text/javascript"&gt; var scribd_doc = new scribd.Document(2191966, 'key-2nm4l94xlcvsddolkk6d'); scribd_doc.write('embedded_flash_2191966_qcv07');&lt;/script&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-7030458827298766108?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/7030458827298766108'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/7030458827298766108'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/02/uploading-powerpoint-to-blogger.html' title='Uploading PowerPoint to Blogger'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-2518873729984742046</id><published>2008-02-15T14:39:00.003Z</published><updated>2008-02-15T14:45:36.776Z</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='classtools'/><title type='text'>Priorities, priorities!</title><content type='html'>In this activity from &lt;a href="http://www.classtools.net/"&gt;www.classtools.net&lt;/a&gt; you can ask students to prioritise a list of factors. Once done, go to your "dashboard" (you'll need to log in by clicking on the "Meta" "log in" or "admin" link) and post a few entries - anything will do, you're just practising! Remember posts are displayed most recent at the top. Remember to fill in the "tag" and/or "categories" boxes with as many key words as you wish - it will make your blog much easier to manage and use. If you are using edublogs, go to "Manage pages" and create a few new pages - remembering these exist outside of the usual hierarchy of blog posts. You might assign different pages to different key stages classes, topics, Units or skills. Tabs for your new pages will appear at the top of your main page. &lt;br /&gt;Last task: either do this yourself or ask someone to do it for you. Access the blog without logging in and fill in a comments box (follow in-screen instructions). This is the only way other users will be able to post on the blog, unless you give them authoring rights. In edublogs you will then receive an e-mail, inviting you to moderate that comment. Once you have moderated, it will be posted automatically. Have a think about how you might encourage girls to participate actively in your blog by commenting (some ideas from me next post).&lt;br /&gt;Next bloggers' club will be after half-term. Have a good week off.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-5764407817399013925?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/5764407817399013925'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/5764407817399013925'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/02/blog-club-task-two.html' title='Blog club task two'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-2383094591754806875</id><published>2008-01-29T12:11:00.001Z</published><updated>2008-01-29T12:12:56.946Z</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='subject blogs'/><title type='text'>New blog</title><content type='html'>Julian has set up in Blogger, so another one added to our blogroll below.&lt;br /&gt;http://julian-murphy.blogspot.com/&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/759368468069062518-2383094591754806875?l=digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/2383094591754806875'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/759368468069062518/posts/default/2383094591754806875'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://digitalbraincandy.blogspot.com/2008/01/new-blog_29.html' title='New blog'/><author><name>Gail</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/00772776327233124620</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email><gd:image rel='http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#thumbnail' width='16' height='16' src='http://img2.blogblog.com/img/b16-rounded.gif'/></author></entry><entry><id>tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-759368468069062518.post-2049805279742417492</id><published>2008-01-24T21:16:00.000Z</published><updated>2008-01-24T21:22:06.248Z</updated><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='cartoon'/><category scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='blog club'/><title type='text'>Child's play:click on the cartoon to scroll across</title><content type='html'>&lt;object width="400" height="320" align="middle" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" id="embedToonDooV2"&gt; Choose from &lt;a href="http://www.blogger.com/"&gt;www.blogger.com&lt;/a&gt; (this one is an example) or &lt;a href="http://www.edublogs.org/"&gt;www.edublogs.org&lt;/a&gt; (look at my French blog at &lt;a href="http://www.haythorneg@edublogs.org/"&gt;www.haythorneg@edublogs.org&lt;/a&gt;).&lt;br /&gt;Edublogs allows you to use a number of pages, as well as reverse-chronological posting on any particular page, and functions such as getting students to subscribe by e-mail, tag-clouds (an eye-catching way of enabling people to search the site) and uploading of audio files, PowerPoints and pictures are easy. Blogger has more options for blogging on the go (maybe for you, PE?) including posting from any e-mail address and posting from mobile phones, plus it has impressive features such as slideshows of photos and using newsreels. Don't agonise too much however: they seem to expand their features all the time. Have a word with me if you need more advice.&lt;br /&gt;Go to the relevant website, create an account, and follow the instructions to set up a blog (a couple of clicks will do it).&lt;br /&gt;When choosing a theme (template or appearance) in edublogs, make sure you choose a three column one, as it offers you more functions ("widgets"). Please now send me a link and I'll post them here so we can share what we do as we go along.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Next week we will add pages (in edublogs) and start posting (edublogs and blogger) - if you can wait until then. Remember help is available next Friday, 1st February, at lunchtime (venue tba). Have a look at the video below for a clear explanation and instructions on how to get started. The most popular "feeds" to achieve this are RSS and Atom. Click on the link below to see how this works. This saves you or your students checking blogs/websites frequently. To manage a number of feeds you can use a "newsreader" or "feed aggregator", which can organise a number of feeds in folders for your convenience.
